  3. Commuter Workhorse

    Commuter Workhorse

When it arrived in the 1970's, the F40PH was the quintessential commuter locomotive. Caltrain rosters 23 F40's that are right at home on the Peninsula with its many quick starts and stops.

    No Respect at All

Two weathered warriors sit in the sea of yellow at the Denver shop deadline. Note the AOE consist stored in the background - I photographed them in Winnipeg multiple times before their demise/bankruptcy.

SP at Crescent Lake in 1994

  8. This Nose Still Bleeds SP

    This Nose Still Bleeds SP

The nose patch on UP 1386 has fallen off, and the paint on its flanks is faded - just like an SP should be! Without the yellow patches, this lashup would be more reminiscent of SP in the late 80's. Hard to believe it's 2009.
  9. Norden Turntable

    Norden Turntable

The covered turntable at Norden only lasted to 1993 because it was more expensive to knock down than to maintain. It was last used to turn engines and MoW (snow removal)in the early 1980s. By 1984, the roof was in danger of collapsing and was susquently reinforced by giant timber beams. The...

    Better Days at Tunnel Six

SP 9254 and a "buddy" power the Truckee work train at Tunnel 6 and the original summit tunnel of Donner Summit. This train is actually backing up to go east to Truckee via #1 track. It had just finished picking up tie plates and spikes using a burro crane. Of course, SP-VP Moyer...
  11. Passing Raggedy

    Passing Raggedy

SP 8363 West is drifting downhill into East Gold Run. SP MoW crews always refered to this xing as Raggedy A$$, but only refered to the first part when using the PBX channel. The wig wag would come out in 1990.

    1 Market Street

A MUNI "Milano" car passes by the building known by most San Franciscans as "1 Market Street," but if you look closely enough, you can see whose headquarters once occupied this impressive edifice.

    CZ Varnish at Bayshore

The old California Zephyr dome "Silver Solarium" trails on the rear end of a SP 2472 steam special in December of 2002. The dome observation looked great with the matching train of stainless steel coaches as they roll past Bayshore, California.
