This photo, taken Sept. 29th, 2010 in Joseph, Oregon, shows what the Joseph Branch (ex Idaho Northern Pacific, ex UP) in northeast Oregon is about. That is a center beam car storage for the UP. From Wallowa to Joseph some 1,200+ cars are stored throughout the valley. Many of the residents seem to complain about the viual blight, but the $59,000 a month "storage fee" the UP pays the counties has to help the economically pressed area.

It is sad to see the cars filling the line, meaning nothing else is going in and nothing else can go out. The feeling is that when the storage lease expires in 2012, and the cars are pulled back towards La Grande, these rails will have seen their last train, leaving this beautiful area silent of the lonesome whistle.

This happens here in Manitoba, car storage is normally on branch lines of the
CP and CN were grain hoppers are stored. The centre-beam lumber flatcars are stored in other areas.

Does this mean before the cars were stored, the line was out of service or used on occassion? Alot of people want the scene of beauty versus the beast of the economical sense is making at the monthly storage fee.
