SF BAY AREA
Long exposure of the action as ACE 08 glides through East Hearst on the Oakland Sub. This is the 3rd of 4 evening eastbound commute trains. Traffic heading home from the Silicon Valley on Interstate 680 can been seen through the trees between the signals. Descriptions are below each photo.
The approach lit signals at the east end of Hearst Siding between Sunol and Pleasanton, CA signal the commute train will be here shortly. This allowed me to focus the lens as the signals are typically dark and I cannot see any of the surroundings in the early winter darkness.
The passenger train glides through the east end of the siding. The bright headlights of the Bombardier cab car illuminate the rock cliff to my right and the trees surrounding this scenic area of the Oakland Subdivision. This siding isn't often used as traffic is relatively light on the Oakland Sub and short compared to other sidings. Though, this area is popular with railfans as it is the interchange point with the Niles Canyon Railway (Pacific Locomotive Association) and has been the location for special photo ops and historic equipment moves. Occasionally opposing short UP freights or locals will meet ACE here at Hearst.
The signals return to red before going dark as the train leaves the block for the next station stop of Pleasanton only minutes away.
