I was sitting in the bush waiting to hear a train on the scanner (CBNS 306), when I suddenly hear something moving on the rails. Grab my camera and this is the result. Because of this MOW convoy (there were 2 more hi-rail cars, one SRS/Sperry and CBNS's own) the train I was waiting for was...
On my last full day in Winnipeg I made it my priority to visit the only place that I haven't been before - CP Transcona yards. The yard is primary used to store unused CP MOW equipment. Where else would you see a line of 20 bunk cars on flats, 5 multimark cabooses in a row, or a line of...
I was done railfanning for the day, when I heard that a Sperry car was only 22 miles from me, so I decided to wait for it. Do to "traffic" it took him nearly two hours to reach Saskatoon. I'm guessing the crew of the last train I saw (542), told Sperry's crew that I was waiting for...
UP maintenance of way workers scratch their heads over what to do next in the cleanup of a derailment in Richmond, California, in 1999. For several years afterward, a big red stain on the ground could still be seen at the location of the spilled powder.
Not sure what KBR 850 stands for, but it's a cool machine that I've often seen on CN/CP and now CBNS. In this case he is clearing the right of way. Note the string of empty green ex-DEVCO coal cars in the backround.
Built in 1968, it was a 52' gondola before CP decided to upgrade it to a woodchip car sometime in its life. In 1999 most of the series was retired, but a couple remained in MOW service. Don't remember where I read this, but apparently its used to transport ties for CP so that they can be sold...
TRAX cars are ussually used for MOW but this is one of the few, maybe even the only one used in revenue service along with the usual CN/IC/WC and NBSR wood cars we get.
Note that it appears to be a weld from two different cars. You can clearly see the differences on the top! Must be hard...
In Winnipeg I railfanned for two years next to a MOW depo and thus have assumed that I've seen 95% of the CN MOW stuff. Now I know why I left the 5%. Never seen anything like it before! It looks like a double cabbed modern motorcar, not to mention it's pulling an old school motorcar trailer with...
