The bulk of the B39-8 fleet (102 engines) worked for Burlington Northern, on a lease from Locomotive Management Services. Afterwords numerous shortlines, such as BC Rail, MMA, Utah Central and Providence & Worcester bought them, with many still retaining their original paint.

Ironically, despite limited sales, with ATSF & SP only buying 3 & 40 units each, the B39s ended up running on all six Class I's!

UP (ex-SP units), BNSF (ex-ATSF units), NS (lease), CSX (lease), CN (ex-BCOL units) & CP (MMA running rights).
