CPR Selkirk 2-10-4 No. 5931, Calgary

5931 standing at entrance to Heritage Park, Calgary in July 2003
Darn that fence, eh? Just a little trivia, that's actually Selkirk #5934. The real 5931 was in bad shape when the City of Calgary purchased it. Since public fund raising was used, CPR renumbered #5934 as it was in much better shape at the time, to the paperwork straight and to prevent any public relations "issues". BTW, "5931" may look good on the outside, but it is virtually rotted out on the inside. By 2001, the engine was looking in pretty sad shape, they went to spruce it up and give it a complete make-over when they discovered that there was severe corrosion and rot up around the cab and the exhaust stack. That year they performed just enough repairs to restore its appearances... but that's all.

It would have been neat to see her steaming out to her old stomping grounds in the Rockies on excursions or something...
