BHP Billiton SD40-R 3096

BHP Billiton SD40-R 3096

3096 at the trail end of the first ballast train onto the new duplication at Cowra.

This loco started life as SP 8429, then SP 7309 after rebuild.
Appears to be part of the nose cut out below the center windshield on the engineer's side. Very RED dirt, great photo !

Love the snow plough - really useful in the Pilbara... presumably now a roo-bar.

Also just to keep the "foreign import" theme going - the wagons appear to be CFCLA ballast hoppers - imported and converted former ATSF wagons.

Very nice contrast indeed! Is this SD40 pre -2? No small oval window on long hood, standard trucks, not HTC. And the rail in the foreground, what is the black plate on there for?

mrmoose, the info I have to hand indicates this was SP 8429, Builder's # 31510, Frame # 7861-20, March '66. The "black plate" is black paint with weld ID details in white paint pen. rgmccau, the snow plough would get more use with cattle rathr than with roos. :)))
