Fall colors road trip. Started along the UP and Hwy 30 in Iowa. Caught a CN train around Woodbine and headed south for the BNSF and more color. Snow last week must have knocked a lot of leaves off the trees. Ubiquitous CB&Q bridge and dry and dusty, when a truck goes by, conditions at MP 450 or East of Emerson IA. BNSF 6184 was at East River, just east of the Missouri River.

Rainy day today but I thought I heard Amtrak so I headed for Oreapolis. 3 trains were sitting at various places in the area with the local #410 on the line that Amtrak would have gone down, so I was wrong. The signal was set for a UP train to cross so we sat around and waited. Heard the dispatcher say the UP disappeared so green signal came and the parade started. The a UP track inspector came and we waited some more. I was rewarded with the Geometry train or whatever it was.

Found a NS locomotive traversing the old IC now CN today. Chased to Denison IA. He stopped to switch some cars at Dunlap. 1st pic is at Willet, where the CN crosses over the UP exCNW. Always hope for a train under too, but not today. UP 5500 parallel to the CN and the 737 heading east after switching the Ethanol plant at Denison. And then pics of the fall grasses in the rolling hills south of the UP tracks in not flat Iowa.

Here are a few from a different angle, at bridge level. Eastbounds this time of year will get no favorable sun.
And one from Dunlap.

Sounds like you need a good map or a native guide to keep track of all the lines.
Looks like fall is over in the Omaha area. After driving my wife to work, hour and 5 minutes for 14 miles, I ventured to Council Bluffs. While Omaha was at a standstill on the interstate highways, CB was moving along and the trains were running. UP at 2nd avenue with the red signal where the 12th street line enters the main.
The CN yard had power waiting to start the day.
And then a shot of the RailsWest museum in the former Rock Island depot in CB.

And I thought the Midwest knew how to handle snow.

Many forgot over the summer. It was amazing the number of accidents and generally stupid driving. What else could I do but photo trains?
Three from late October when Fall was still hanging around.

Very nice, Ed.
Orep is still a good place to photo.
Forgot I grabbed a couple on Nov 7th, near Crescent IA. Third shot is by Omaha's Amtrak Station--not sure if they were installing a new antenna or removing an old one. The one on the right seems to be like most of the ones I've seen installed for PTC operation.

Good stuff Ed. Here are some from today. The UP 4440 was on the head end of a Bunge grain train that had every street blocked from 16 ave(Rock Island Station) to 17 st on the old CB&Q tied up. I went up to the CN and came back and the train was still there. Many trucks and cars waiting to move. And some freight cars I liked. The 6044 and the 6900 had a covered hopper train that came up from the south. May have come from Bayard. KCS parked for the train that is in the elevator on the south end of Council Bluffs.

Forgot to mention that there was 5 or six BNSF locos in the IAIS shop tracks. not sure why
Good shots Tom. I've also noticed BNSF power by the shops quite often over the last few months and wondered the same as you.
Great seeing everyone's photos. Keep up the good work!
Apparently IAIS is running off some lease hours or something. Found a KCS and Greinstein (I obviously don't know how to spell it) going to pick up the UP transfer. There was another BNSF unit switching the old MILW yard. The ones in the snow are from the 9th of Nov. The 9465 is sitting at the stop board at the UP 12th St line crossing with the "Rock Island". I still find it interesting that the east UP yard still refers to the pick up tracks as Rock Island tracks.

I recall someone else who used to post photos here.
Went out today to test a new microphone for the sound recorder, and it is supposed to be really cold and windy tomorrow, so this was the last warm day for a while. Went to Oreapolis and watched 5 or 6 trains go by.
