The description says " The standards lens for photojournalism..." and I concur. I use it every day in a wide variety of situations, and it is indeed a great lens. Sharp, fast, a quiet. Maybe a little heavy, but balances well on a pro SLR. Takes a beating, too.
Use it for news/breaking news, sports, and portraits. If they took it away from me I would quit.

Pros:
Really outstanding lens
Cons:
Slight barrel distortion at wide end - easily correctable in Photoshop or DXO optics Pro
Wonderful sharp lens - and worth the price. Great for low light shooting and performs well even wide open.

Not as tough as I would like

Great lens. My only complaint is really minor. I accidentally dropped mine 2 days after I bought it. It fell about 12 inches onto the lens shade. The release button on the camera had been pressed a little in the bag and it fell off when i picked the camera up out of the bag. The repair was $500. I personally think Nikon should build them a bit tougher for the price they ask. Other then that one issue, I love it!! One of my favorites. I shoot it on a D2x, and can't wait to try it on a D3 one day.
