Pros: Superb optics, IS, contrasty and sharp photos right out of the cam, built like a brick.
Cons: Expensive and heavy.

I replaced a 70-300mm IS with this lens, and have been happy with it so far. Photos from L lenses have brilliant and true color, and rarely need post-processing. The Image Stabilizer will compensate for two stops of camera shake reduction, meaning that blur-free 400mm images can be shot handheld at 1/100th sec. (1/160th on crop cameras) and faster. Lens construction is good and solid. The push-pull zoom can be both a con and a pro, but I like it because zooming action is fluid and can be done quickly.

Pros: Nice range of zoom
Cons: DUST PUMP (push pull zoom)

It took good shots, but I hated the dust that it collected inside over time from the rare push-pull style zoom/ Sold it asap and replaced with a EF 70-200mm f/2.8 and 1.4X II extender. It's next replacement model is long over due.
