Fast, quiet auto-focus

Canon’s affordable telephoto zoom with Image Stabilizer.

Affordable high magnification
The powerful yet reasonably priced EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM will appeal to nature and sports photographers looking to achieve sharper images when shooting handheld. Focal length translates to approx. 112-480mm equivalent in 35mm film format when fitted to cameras with APS-C size sensors.

Image Stabilizer
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM features Canon's 3-stop Image Stabilizer (IS). Ideal for handheld photography, Canon’s Image Stabilizer allows photographers to use shutter speeds up to 3-stops slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. For stabilized panning, IS Mode 2 only corrects for unwanted vertical shake by switching off IS in the horizontal direction. IS is ideal for low light conditions, fast paced scenes and for shooting from moving vehicles. IS switches off automatically when the camera is mounted on a tripod.

UD lens element
A UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens element corrects chromatic aberration to achieve high resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range without colour fringing on subject outlines. Only lead free glass is used in the lens construction.

Super Spectra coatings
Optimised Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true colour balance and sharp high contrast images.

Pleasing background blur
A circular barrel aperture helps to create an attractive, even background blur when isolating a subject at large apertures.

Fast auto-focus
The lens's micro USM motor uses ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive rapid auto-focus with near-silent operation. Good holding torque ensures there is no overshoot. A high speed CPU and optimised AF algorithm contribute to AF speed literally faster than the human eye.

Pros: Very good image quality (esp. for price), Image Stabilization, flexible focal range.
Cons: Mediocre build quality, no lens hood included.

This lens is a great value for the reasons listed above, and can easily be compared with more expensive alternatives. The only complaint I have is that it seems plasticy and cheaply built. (Though the optics are still excellent.)

Pros: Light weight responsive sharp and IS
Cons: It is no an L but in its class it is a 10, rotating front section on focus

I generally use a 70-200 Sigma w/ 1.4x for this range. I was at my local camera store several weeks ago and found this used. Put it on camera, "just playing around." I loved the weight and size. Checked a few images, very nice, on long ends backgrounds dropped out and showed relatively good boken, when set wide open.

I have been using it for several weeks and it has replaced my sigma for general use. I still use the sigma (f 2.8) for sports to get higher shutter speeds and when i must have less DOF.

A summary might say, If I had to choose between my sigma and this lens, I would likely choose this one.

added: I forgot to mention one thing I do not care for but can live with. The front section rotates when focusing. This is sort of troublesome when using PL's.

Pros: Cheap, Very nice IQ, Light weight, IS
Cons: Rotating front element, Lacks constant aperture, Slow focus compared to more expensive (ring USM) lenses, Lens hood is not included

This is a very nice lens for the money. My son has one and loves it. The IS is very nice.

For me, the cons listed above are significant enough for me to stay with my current 70-200 f4L. It's a tough choice though as the IS version of the 70-200 f4L is twice the money of the 70-300IS.
