Autofocus lens for macro photography up to life-size (1x) magnification
Medium telephoto lens with a macro feature for 1x magnification. Fluctuations in spherical aberrations caused by focusing are suppressed, and high-quality images are obtained at all focusing distances. With eight aperture blades, good background blur is obtained even when the aperture is decreased by one or two stops. A focusing limiter which limits the magnification to 0.25x is built-in.

Ideal as a macro, is also fabulous for low light shooting (f2.8). Great bokeh (background blur). Highly recommend the separate hood as it will avoid the need for a "insurance" filter, which for macro work is just a way to degrade image quality.
This is a substantial lens and feels good in use. As a prime, it takes some getting used to using properly. It probably won't be my main railfan lens, but it wasn't purchased for that purpose anyway.
Note that on a crop sensor Canon lens this has the field of view equivalent to a 160mm lens.
