High-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens combining lightweight and compactness with an f/4 maximum aperture

High-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens combining lightweight and compactness with an f/4 maximum aperture. Inner focusing and the ring USM enable quick and quiet auto-focusing. A circular polarizing filter can also be attached and used without difficulty because the front lens element does not rotate during focusing. The tripod collar (sold separately) is the same one used with the EF 300mm f/4L USM.

Pros: Great image quality, relatively low priced for an L series (Canon professional series) lens, 200 mm sufficient for most of the railfanning trips, fast focus good for fast moving trains, light enough to carry around all day.
Cons: Still relatively expensive at $550, f4 aperture not sufficient for some low light situations (cloudy days/evenings), some flaring from headlights when shooting head on, 70 mm is not short enough for up close shots, addiction to the L series lenses and eve

Pros: Very sharp image quality, fast focus, great build quality, reasonable weight, decent price
Cons: noticeable flare in low light shots

The 70-200 is a great lens for day shooting. The only reason I didn't rate it a 10 is the flare it can show with bright lights at night. Other than that, it's a joy to own. It produces razor sharp images with great color and contrast. Of course, there's always the fantastic L quality build to drool over too.

Not that is matters to many railfans, but the 70-200 f4 L is also a darn nice portrait lens...

Pros: Sharp all the way down to f/4.0, "L" quality, Colors are bright and vivid, excellent IQ.
Cons: Ugly black lens hood, not weather resistant, lens cap hard to put on.

This is probably my most used lens. The colors are fantastic, and the lens itself is relatively light, the focus is quick and defiantly Canon ultra-sonic quality. Since it's white and not black, it isn't a million degrees when it has been in the sun for a while. I bought mine on eBay and use it on a Canon 10D.
