Description: Welcome to the next generation of digital SLR photography-the Canon EOS 40D. The EOS 40D combines Canon's tremendous know-how in both the digital and photographic worlds, creating a camera that not only does everything one would expect of a traditional digital SLR, but one that incorporates staggering leaps forward in technological innovation. With new features like Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function, a more powerful DIGIC III Image Processor, plus a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.0-inch LCD monitor and more, the EOS 40D elevates digital photography to new heights, enhancing the shooting experience, and delivering images one could only expect from a Canon.
Huge Sensor for Tremendous Photographs Superb image quality: 10.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, extensive noise reduction technology, and 14-bit conversion for outstanding color tones and gradations. Canon's large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. This APS-C size sensor (22.5 x 15.0mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. 14-bit A/D conversion means fine transitions from light to dark tones, and a significant drop in digital and shadow noise. The EOS 40D has an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600, plus ISO 3200* in extended mode) which is selectable in 1/3 stop increments. The EOS 40D's CMOS sensor uses much of the new technology first seen in the EOS-1D Mark III camera. New manufacturing techniques mean each pixel is more sensitive to light, and less area between pixels is wasted on the sensor. The on-chip noise reduction electronics are also entirely new, and combine with the sensor's general design for less digital noise and better high-ISO performance than ever before. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start.

Pros: 10 Megapixels, fast 6.5 frames per second, big LCD display, exceptional image quality, Strong Camera Body
Cons: None

The Canon EOS 40D is my favorite camera. I really love the speed of the shutter box, the high resolution image, and the style of the camera body. Now I use my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT as my backup. I really love the key features of the camera. From the 10.1 megapixels sensor to the fast 6.5 frames per second. I would use this camera for everything, especially when it comes to railroad photography. This camera haven't failed me so far, and I am very happy with the results.

Pros: Low noise, build quality, frame rate, custom menu options, available lenses
Cons: lack of meaningful weather sealing

I love my 40D. It has a quality feel that is a definite step up from my XTi. I use a camera for more than just railfanning, and while Canon has added some modest weather sealing to the 40D, it should be better for a camera body in this price range.

The live view function is a handy feature at times and is a welcome addition. Frame rate and the camera's controls are first rate, IMHO. I love the user customizable menu option!

In summary, the 40D is an awesome set up. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a dSLR in its price range.

Pros: Build Quality, availability of GOOD glass, pictures are AWESOME
Cons: Tungstan White Balance, weather sealing could be better

With the $200 instant Canon Rebate (May 18 - July 19, 2008) its impossible to go wrong with a 40D. This coming from a 30 year Canon shooter (1st Camera was AE-1) and I sold my 20D to get the 40.. That said, even veteran Canon shooters will need to invest some quality time with the manual to bring to bear the features this camera offers.

Here's where I got mine:
