Di II: Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers and inherit all of the benefits of our Di products. These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm.
The SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras, expanding the product concept of the popular SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 zoom lens.
In addition, portrait shots are made beautiful with the natural out-of-focus effect characteristic provided by the fast F/2.8 aperture. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure. The lens boasts one of the best close-up shooting performances in the class of fast standard zoom lenses designed exclusively for digital cameras and featuring an F/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances.

I had the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It seemed like a good value on a high performance lens when I read various online reviews. Unfortunately, the sample I recieved (factory new) had serious autofocus issues. The focus "hunted" even in good light (producing less than stellar images) and was useless in marginal light. I returned the lens to B&H and replaced it with a Canon lens that has performed admirably (17-40L). While one defective lens may not be statistically important, the Tamron product was an aggravation and disappointment.

Mine is a repackage under Promaster brand. It has exceeded all my expetations. I have found it to me the most used lense by wedding photographers and photojournalist in our area. It stays on one of my railfan cameras all the time.
I found installing a UV filter (a resonably good one) degrades the aparent sharpness drastically. As the lens come with a good lense shade the UV protection is not that necessary.
OH! the Promaster lense cap is a real dog, the Tamron one is a heap better.
I would have given it a 10 rating if it had better weather sealing.

This is a freat alternative to and "L" series lens. I would like to get and "L" lens but do not have the cash for it right not. This is now my primary lens on my camera. As with all lenses there are pros and cons. I personally like the lens as it suits my needs at the present time.
