Can you tell this is the “yard engine”? Whenever there’s a big job, the yard crews abandon the GP9RM/slug set and/or the GMD1u duo in favour of road power. I’m guessing this set went to Humboldt, as they brought in a near full size grain train with 11 ore hoppers up front (i.e. CN 864/5) five hours later. A fellow railfan told me that years ago this job used to be done by two 1000 series GMD1’s. A GM&O SD40 isn’t a bad catch either. The engines are waiting to cross the CP Wilkie sub, blocked by much needed MOW work. Later in the day they took 541 on the Rosetown sub to Kindesly.

So that's what all the "CN 2654 Yard Engine" whining was on the radio.

Yep, why not give it a proper 500 series #? Calling it 864/5 doesn't make much sence either as he's not running to Vancouver.
