Illinois Central Gulf caboose #199422, Chicago, IL, July 6, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Here are a few comments by Dan Kohlberg:

ICG 199422 is part of a series of 50 cabooses built by the IC's own Centralia, Illinois, Carshops in 1972. These cabooses were unique to the IC, with their extended platforms for safety in getting orders, etc. (leaning out of the porch instead of leaning off the steps).

There were several series of these extended porch cabooses, with some detail differences in the roof and body styles. All but one series were built by the IC. There are 300 total.

9350-9399 IC 1972 (Riveted Body, PS Bow-tie roof)
9400-9449 IC 1972 (Riveted Body, PS Bow-tie roof)
9450-9499 IC 1970 (Riveted Body, Stanray Diagonal Panel roof)
9500-9549 Darby 1968 (Welded Body, Smooth roof)
9550-9599 IC 1968 (Riveted Body, Stanray Diagonal Panel roof)
9650-9699 IC 1966 (Riveted Body, Smooth roof)

For the ICG series, simply add a "19" in front of the IC number. Here is the IC freight car diagram to the 199422 in your photo:

Your photo is worth noting as it is a relatively "rare" scheme for the cabooses. I am only aware of two cabooses that wore the ICG up on the cupola like that, ICG 199421 being the other.

The 300 cabooses lasted up through the early 1980s relatively intact. At that point, like most other railroads' caboose fleets, they were sold off and/or scrapped. A few of these cabooses still run for the present day CN.

Supposedly, the 199421 was sold off to the French Lick, West Baden & Southern RR in Indiana.
