Government of Ontario GP-40TC #506, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 8, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler.
Built December 1966, this was one of only eight GP-40TC (the TC = Toronto Commuter) locomotives built by GMD. It was delivered as #606 (c/n A2131), later renumbered 9806, finally 506. Although a standard GP-40 under the hood, it was built on a SD-40 frame to allow the addition of a 500 horsepower 575 volt Head End Power (HEP) unit at the rear. Unfortunately, the HEP produced an unacceptable amount of noise, and the design was not repeated. The GP-40TC's worked until 1988, when they were sold to Amtrak. See the links below for more details.
