Hello List:

Would anyone know of any trackside motel/inn locations in Washington, Idaho, and Montana for railfanning? Anyone have a favorite?

Thank you,

Mike Mills

There is a motel in Sandpoint, ID opposite the tracks as the old NP passenger depot. I forget the name, but others may know it.

I believe it is the Best Western that you are referring to. It nice location because it has the railroad one side, the lake + beach on the other side and is right next to a great city park. On the other side of the tracks is the downtown core of Sandpoint with all of the shops. So there is a lot to do for the non-railroading fans in the family as well within easy walking distance.

Default motels

A couple of places come to mind:
In Sprague, WA there is a motel just east of downtown called the "Last Roundup Motel." Don't worry, I've stayed there a couple of times and lived to tell about it! Great view of the Pasco-Spokane main, climbing to the Fishtrap/Cheney area.

In Cheney, there is a place called the Willow Springs Inn. The rooms on the very east end have a trackside view. They used to face the Palouse and Coulee City RR office (with some old GP30s on the sidetrack). Not sure what is there now...
I've stayed at the Best Western in Sandpoint. The place I expected to stay in (Lakeside Motel) had burned down and was a vacant lot the last time I went by (probably 2006). Too bad; great view of the Lake Pend Oreille bridge east approach (and plenty of Funnel traffic!)

Default Motels and Railroads

There's a great motel in west Spokane. Can't recall the name, but it's just east of the railroad-oriented restaurant (Spokane Jct?). Right next to the main coming off the big bridge.

That would be Sunset Junction. You're not talking about the Sunset Motel, are you? You couldn't pay me to stay at that place.
