The White Pass & Yukon's (WP&Y) locomotive number 114 is currently in Seattle at the Alaska Marine Line's yard and has now been placed on a flatcar, awaiting transport.
This MLW built narrow gauge diesel locomotive was the locomotive involved in a WP&Y ballast train derailment on Sept. 3rd, 2006, near Bennett,BC, which injured 3 WP&Y employee's and killed one other WP&Y employee. Currently the derailment is believed to have been caused by the Ballast train after it became a runaway train, but as of this date the White Pass & Yukon Railroad and Transport Canada have not released any information regarding the cause of the derailment. More information on the derailment can be found at, http://www.skagwaynews.com/090806stories.html. Daniel Last edited by bn6363; 10-06-2008 at 11:15 PM. |

Any idea where it is going? Somewhere for rebuilding?

My guess would be CEECO, just down the tracks in Tacoma. CEECO does heavy repairs as well as routine maintenance, though with a narrow gauge engine it may be interesting to see how they handle it in their facility.

It's been reported to be going to Tacoma,WA. So CEECo is my best guess.

Most of Alco/MLW's export locomotives (including the DL535 series) were built for use with a variety of track gauges, so fitting a set of standard gauge shop trucks won't be a problem.

Hard to believe that there's much left worth saving...

It is hard to believe this engine will not be scrapped. It was built in 1985 by MLW. However, what will be interesting is what this rebuilt locomotive will look like. (Or how long it will take to bebuilt it.)

1985? 1975 would be more like it; MLW stopped building new locomotives (except for the LRC power cars) in 1982.
Rebuilding shouldn't be that big a challenge or result in a new look for this locomotive (unless WP&Y wants it rebuilt with a safety cab). It looks like most of the machinery and the frame are intact and /or repairable, and fabricating new hoods and a cab that are the same as the originals shouldn't be a problem. Except for the sheetmetal work, rebuilding this locomotive would require the same amount of work as some of the Class 1 RR's rebuild programs. Still, as you said, it will be interesting to see what the finished product will look like.
