Default Another C30-7???

Found this unusual consists in Taylor this morning. The SD70M is nothing to write home about, the SD70ACe is a little bit better, but what is that last unit? The door is open so I can't get the reporting marks, so I am just left with a number and a paint scheme I have not seen before. My gut says C30-7, what do yall think?

It might be a Mexico unit.. if it is, it could be a U34C

I would also bet that those reporting marks hidden by the open compartment doors read "VLIX"....

Yep, U34CHs were used by Conrail, NJ Transit, and yes, SEPTA!

actually NREX, several of these U34CH's have arrived on NRE property from Mexico recently. They are likely to be stripped for parts or maybe sent to Brazil.

I have never heard of an U34CH, what does the H mean? Steam generator or something? How rare are these? Like 5 still running or what?

H probably stands for Head End Power, since they had a HEP generator running off the prime mover.

they were commuter units on NJ Transit... Rare and Unique! I do believe the "h" stands for heat...

Here's the history and links...

http://www.hobokenterminal.com/u34ch.html

I don't think the roster page is very up to date though, as I suspect most have been scrapped... I took pictures of them at Laredo in the mid 90's as they were on their way to Mexico... Most power that goes south of the border, never seems to make it back... not sure if that's still the case though...

I'll try and find the pix and post from home tonight...
