Default Tour of Central NY / Finger Lakes Region.

I took drive down to Waverly, NY, to visit my parents (Mother's day!) and help them out with some annual springtime yard work..cleaning out the goldfish pond, sweeping leaves and pine needles from my Dad's garden railroad, that kind of thing..
well, in addition to doing that yard work (which was the main point of the trip) I also managed to fit in quite a bit of railfanning!
I saw a total of 19 locomotives..none of which were running..in fact, every single unit was was not even idleing! totally shut down for the weekend..
thats ok! I actually enjoy photographing still locomotives..no need to chase them!

9am, leave Rochester and head south down 390.
Stopped by Lakeville yard..nothing to see.
just the three red Centuries sitting outside, I didnt take any pictures.

then checked out the Salt mine..just G&W 1000 and 1001 stting in their customary weekend spot.

Tried to see if anything was sitting outside in Dansville..didnt see anything from 390..I imagine everything is indoors.

then, Cohocton.
B&H 4 and WNYP 631 were sitting outside.

The eight Cartier plows are still sitting out front:

On to Waverly..but first, I always swing by Sayre to see if anything ineresting is in town..
For the last decade or so, I have only visited the Valley on weekends..
and there is nearly always a 3-unit set of NS locos sitting in Sayre, shut down for the weekend.
Always three GE dash-9's..usually pretty boring.
but today! something different!!
Instead of the usual three black NS units, we have two NS units, plus..
a War Pumpkin!
I have seen lots of BNSF power running through Rochester, but this is the first time I have ever seen one up close and personal.

then its out to the wilds of north Waverly to help out my parents..
did some spring clean-up on the StoneHedge railway!
http://gold.mylargescale.com/Scottychaos/LSH5.htm

after several hours, its time to head home..
I deceided to drive home up through the Finger Lakes..it takes a little longer than 17/390, but its a much nicer drive!

Stop by the Ithaca yard..wow, look at this!
In Sayre there was a set of two NS dash-9's, plus the BNSF Pumpkin.
what do we have here in Ithaca??
a set of two NS dash-9's, plus a BNSF Pumpkin!

then its up the West shore of Cayuga Lake,
then over to the East shore of Seneca lake..great evening for a drive!
I had the back roads all to my myself..

Driving along the edge of the Seneca Army Depot, I saw several of the famous White Deer!
http://www.senecawhitedeer.org/

not a great shot of the deer, but its the best I could do from the road.

then its up to Geneva and the FGLK.
6 units slumbering away!

Next stop, Manchester..again, taking the back county roads.
totally by accident, I came across the Orleans water tower!
I photographed the tower years ago, but I was so surprised to see it I stopped and took some more pics!
this is an original PRR steam-era water tower, along the PRR line to Sodus bay.

Then to Manchester to finally check out the LV caboose..
hey, it has a friend! I didnt know that.

On the right, wearing rusty CR blue, is N5G CR 18632, nee LV 95100.

On the left, in CR MOW grey, is CR 46142, ex. PC 19109, nee PRR 477203.

Last stop of the day..its nearly dark.
the LV signals along the LV main east of Victor.
One is on the ground, with "Property of NYMT" written on it.
the second still stands.

thats it!
got back home about 12 hours after I left..a fine day for crusing around the state!

Great photos and report Scot!

I've always loved looking at pictures from that area. Hopefully one day I will get the chance to railfan it myself.

Great stuff!

Just wondering, where exactly is Ithaca yard located? I'll be up there next week and (hopefully) be able to see something

Cool deal. I like the shots of the old water tower right on the road, which I assume back in the day was the ROW.

Thanks for the previews of the Finger Lakes territory. I'll be covering that region on my spare time (if there will be any!) while living at Ithaca College starting next fall. Looks like I won't be left in the dark when it comes to rail action. Maybe I'll be able to meet up with some of you easterners

Hi Scot,

Were the trucks for the 2 forlorn hacks in evidence nearby or not?

The building has been reported as a warehouse and as an old school. Is either correct?

Thanks, Roger

Nice photos Scotty!

I remember the white deer... First time I saw them was an evening run through east of Waverly on an empty Bow train...

And gee... Wouldn't that little Alco switcher look great with one of those Cartier plows on each end!!! hehehe

Is #73 the former CP 4743 by chance?

You must wanted to get away from yr parents really badly....I'm sure that there's another "ithaca college" in washington state.. Lol

Just pm me when u are in nys..

You're not exactly close to me but you're an hour away from busy mainline- chicago line.

We can meet somewhere along the line... Unfortantely, college is during hockey season... But we can try arrange for a meet...

Ken

Those units at Sayre are the power for the salt job that goes to Ithaca every weekday afternoon. It usually sits for the weekend unless they steal it for extra horses on a coal train. The ones parked at Ithaca came off a coal load and will get cut up by the local to be ready for the empties.
