Amtrak Genesis units have been subbing on some of the Cascades, but this one was beautifully matched head to rear.

Thanks. You should come up and video the afternoon/evening passenger parade from the jetty while we still have the best light and most beautiful sunsets of the year.

Friday sunset (7/14/17) from Ocean Ave., about a mile north of MP 18. Some very rushed shots taken handheld with the 7D + 17-35L wide angle zoom.

Nothing I planned. Ocean Ave. is closer and lower to the tracks than Sunset. Ave., so the photo angles are different. The angle was just right to catch the sunset shining through the intakes.

Here are four shots of passing containers. These were planned.

Morning is the best time to take photos from Sunset Ave. as the sun is behind you. Here are some shots I took Saturday morning (7/15/17) while my son was at softball practice.

    Northbound (tt/east) freight.

I returned to Ocean Av. in the evening to try for sunset shots like the previous day. From past experience I knew there would be a short period of time when the sun would be visible between the clouds and land.
A southbound (tt/west) freight was approaching and the timing would have to be perfect for shots of the engine + setting sun. I just missed it, as the sun peeked below the clouds about halfway through the train.

The results were a little disappointing as I was shooting too slow (1/250) for the freight cars to be in sharp focus.
