We saw 7 trains, 5 manifest and 2 empty hopper on the way down hwy 6. At the BNSF near 14th St in Lincoln, an eastbound coal and 2 trains on the siding waiting to get in the yards. And then near the Amtrak station there was a train with 4 engines. Peeking from between 2 is the 1920 in BN green. Also 1 photo from Hobson yard.
On the way home we paced 5081 and then stopped at Ashland to watch it and the mid train engines and the DPU pass. Headlight was dimmed as it went by and a westbound empty hopper showed up right away.
Not sure how we went from 6-12 inches of snow to 2-5 to 1-3 and only got a tenth inch of ice and no snow. No meteorologists were fired as far as I know. Here are my 2 from yesterday and one unusual one from this morning. Hardly ever see an executive on the point much less stopped in Gretna. Must have run out of time.
Went north looking for blue sky and sun. Missouri Valley was better than Omaha but still not good. Lots of coal and hoppers today. Some headed for the "Pleasant Prairie". TV weather showed a bar graph with percentages of snow depths. 30% chance of 6-12" this weekend. 90% of 1-2". So there will be some snow. Maybe.

The Q ran a line south from the main at Villisca, Iowa to Clarinda. It then divided with one line going southwest to Tarkio and Corning Missouri. The other went south through Burlington Junction, Mo and then to Bigelow, MO.

Camera is ready. High of 1 deg F tomorrow. Low of -4. They keep saying it's cold but I remember sitting in the company parking lot, sipping a little Blackberry Brandy while the old VW warmed up in the -20 temps, more than one day that week.
I wish I would have read that last thread before I went out. It was -15 on the car at 8am and -3 when I shot these pictures. First at Greenwood, NE, then south of Waverly where the snow was falling. Rail Grinder at Waverly. Last one is a train facing south (TT west), about to turn on the Ashland wye and go north(TT north) on the Sioux City Line.
Yes powdery. No snowpersons built today. We got it pretty easy. Not near as cold as Chicago or Minneapolis. The sun was out when I got back to Omaha but still below zero. It's 2 this morning and Amtrak is due in Omaha around 11. I might go out or might not.
Like I said, the Omaha Posse is not for wimps. People in the Seattle area think anything below 50* is cold. I must admit that a foggy, damp day in the 40's feels much more uncomfortable than a dry, sunny day in the 20's.
When I lived in Chicagoland I remember a traffic reporter attributing slow rush hour traffic to the bitter cold. I could never figure that one out as the roads were clear and it was not snowing.
