While China is known for modern railroading, it also features some steam train and I was able to visit one on a May 2019 trip. The location is 3 hours outside of the Sichuan Province capital Chengdu and the railroad is called Jiayang Coal Railway.
The railroad was once built to haul coal and service the local population with passenger trains. The coal trains have come and gone including the electrified part of the line but the passenger train hasn't. The lack of road has made this a vital necessity for the locals living along the route and the popularity with foreigners and Chinese a like has made it a popular tourist destination.
In this image, we witness one of the weekend tourist trains blast away in reverse up the grade out of the town of Yuejin as it passes by the coaling tower.
