UNION DEPOT TRAIN DAY

Join us for a celebration of trains and transportation – Saturday, May 5, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Train Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This free, fun annual event will offer guests a glimpse of history and future of passenger train travel, the historic and current role of freight railroads in our region, and changing transportation trends and needs. The day will include exhibits of train equipment, historic railcars, new and vintage buses, bike test drives, and other activities for all ages. Concessions will be available in the Head House and on the train platform.
Getting to Train Day
Metro Transit is offering FREE rides to Union Depot during Train Day (download free ride pass). Enjoy the freedom of the Green Line or taking the bus! Parking, biking and walking are other options available to visitors.

  • Friday Night Photoshoot of railroad equipment – $25 – 8:00 p.m. – Friday, May 4
    As part of Union Depot Train Day, a special night photo session will be held on Friday, May 4 beginning at 8 p.m. The photo session will begin at Union Depot, and will feature Soo Line GP7 locomotive No. 559 in its iconic maroon and gold colors. Also on hand will be Burlington Northern SD9 No. 6234. Both these locomotives are new to Train Day this year. Then participants will drive to the Minnesota Transportation Museum’s Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul, where Great Northern SDP40 No. 325 will be posed for photographs on the roundhouse turntable. The engine is still painted in Burlington Northern Cascade green colors, and will be restored with to its BN 6399 number for the photo shoot. This will be one of the last times the locomotive will be able to be photographed in its green colors, as plans are to repaint the engine in Great Northern Railway Big Sky Blue colors in 2019. Instagrammers are welcome!
  • Laker Rail multi-media shows by top railroad photographers of railroads in action across the Midwest and United States – $25 – 1:00 p.m. – Saturday, May 5
    An exciting multi-media exhibition of railroad photos and video set to music, featuring the work of some of the nation’s top railfan photographers. Programs are 15-20 minutes long, and will start on the hour and half hour. This event will be held in the Union Depot Red Cap Room which overlooks the historic Waiting Room. Tickets for Laker Rail can be purchased at the door.
