That ends the slides that were posted a couple of years ago. Ending with the White Pass narrow gauge #69 at Grand Island, NE, I guess it's back in Alaska now.

Nice shots of the high-hooded UP U25B's and ALCOs. Several rare units in that scrap line.

Were the Western Pacific units all in Omaha? My first house was across thet stree from the WP's South Sacramento yard. I lived there from 1979-1984., so I got to see some of the UP DD40X's pass through town after the merger.

The WP was stuff that was either at the UP shop in Omaha or working in the area. Got a ride in the 6932 once. Backwards from Nebraska City to Union. Had to call signals from the firemans' seat because you couldn't see past the hood.

Didn't UP engines have signal indicators in the cab, or was that older diesels?

Some did. I don't remember seeing that option in the 6936, but then I was like a kid in candy store inside the cab. I was working as a car host on a UP special.

UP had, and still does have cab signals, but only over certain lines. On lines not equipped for cab signal operation, the cab signals wouldn't be operational. Unless a unit was equipped for both directions, and most aren't, they won't work running backwards. All UP road units purchased since the early 1990s (before the UP-CNW merger) have come equipped with both UP and CNW cab signals. Eventually PTC will completely replace the cab signals.

Here are some of my early B&W pictures. 620 film box camera. Didn't learn to avoid telephone poles yet. F's and GP are 1963 and 1964, SD 40 is 1968, the day after a strike ended if I remember correctly, at Ingalton, IL west of Chicago. And a couple of BN polaroids in 1971 or 72. Last one is of the CNW 42nd st yard in Omaha. This would on the line from Irvington to South Omaha. For you locals, the line passed through what is now Nebraska Furniture Mart. "Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end."
