I am a historical fiction writer working on a novel set in the 1930s that involves a train wreck. Generally, at a small rural train station at this time, who would be in charge of changing the switch stand? Would it be a member of the track gang? The track foreman? Or other? Thanks so much.

I'm not totally sure, but back in the day, they did have switch tenders who were guys that manned the switches in the yards, but on the main lines it would have been the train crew and most likely the brakeman at the head end. You mention a station which leads me to think you're talking about a passenger type train and if so, I wouldn't know for sure, but it may be the Conductor in that case? I know there are some "old heads" :) on the forum that could answer this better but just in case, these are my answers and I'll learn with you if I'm wrong. :) Good Luck!
