April 4 2015

Saturday afternoon we had returned from Medias, I still stayed a little on the road bridge across Sibiu station featuring a view towards the Fagaras Mountains and depot.

That way I managed to capture our favourite train, IR 346 "Dacia" Bucharest - Vienna, in front of this backdrop. Once more 65-0943 was in service.

April 5 2015


On Palm / Easter Sunday morning the sun was shining directly at the Liar's Bridge in front of our "House of the Astronomer".

A statue of Georg Daniel Teutsch in front of the Protestant Cathedral, the Catholic church in the background. Subsequently we ate breakfast at "Café Vienna" next door.

Afterwards I walked towards the north-eastern corner of town, to Sibiu halt situated below the bridge of national road 14. I waited for some time, the area was busy as there seemed to be market day nearby. However, most people crossed the tracks under the bridge, only few went through the hassle of passing over it. Quite a traffic jam was forming on the national road.
At 10:50 IR 347 "Dacia" Vienna - Bucharest returned once again hauled by 65-0943.

We met again at the accommodation and took a taxi to open air museum Astra, situated in the nature sanctuary "Young Forest" southwest of the city.


To the right you can see former Sibiu tram line abandoned in 2013 in front of one of the museum entrances:

We are talking about the largest open air museum in Romania displaying 400 buildings from all over the country on 240 acres, here you can even visit it virtually:

The objects were divided by agricultural use, we entered the museum past a working inn and reached a section featuring mills.

Due to obvious reasons smoking is strictly forbidden - and only allowed at certain remote spots.

In front of an 18th century church some naive wooden crosses could be encountered.

One of several lakes is located in the centre of the park. At the other end you can spot windmills and other buildings from the Danube Delta, as well as houseboats and ferries.

Sadly one wooden church, which had been erected near Cluj in the 17th century, was locked. I managed to take pictures through the window.

Amongst village ensembles we came across a railway: a gold mine shaft from the surroundings of Alba.

Another wooden church dating from the 18th century in Salaj region was open to visitors.

On the brochure of the museum you can find a dream photo of the windmills - sadly it was not completely possible to reproduce as the reed belt of the lake had been burnt down.

We took the public bus back into the city, the central cemetery was very busy on this Orthodox Palm Sunday (Catholic / Protestant Easter Sunday).

As no ticket machines could be found in front of the museum, the bus driver was so kind to let us buy our tickets here and waited. A cluster of people formed around the machine aiding us with a quick purchase.

We got off at the southern city wall and walked into the centre.

The Orthodox Cathedral had been built under Emperor Francis Joseph at the beginning of the 20th century, but still was quite interesting to visit.

As the weather worsened, we ate lunch at Restaurant Weidner on Piata Mare as only guests in the afternoon. The quality was good, the price appropriate - apart from the waiter keeping his tip without asking there was nothing to complain.

Around 6 p.m. we returned to the accommodation to get our luggage. The landlady had given us a basket of sweets for Easter, her father - who had previously worked as food scientist - brought us a bottle of wine from his own vineyard.

Around seven we reached the station. It had properly started to rain, but now we did not care anymore.

The arrival of our "Dacia" can be watched on the video at 58:48. The overnight ride was punctual and without incidents, we were comfortably dropped off directly near my home next morning.



On April 22 2015 I visited Nickelsdorf on the Austrian border to Hungary - recently safe haven for many people in need - in the morning to catch "Dacia" in its EuroNight-incarnation. MÁV 470 006 rushed past towards Vienna slightly delayed, as you can see the train also conveyed four coaches at this time.

How are we going to continue? Well, some of you already know that there still is more to come about Romania in 2015... :0)

sehr schöner Beitrag. Vielleicht verschlägt es mich nächstest Jahr auch wieder nach Rumänien (Momentan schwankt das so zwischen Russland oder eine Rundreise Slowakei/Ungarn/Serbien/Rumänien). Leider wird dort ja wieder ein Kahlschlag gemacht in Sachen Stilllegung. Andererseits bei dem Zustand der Nebenbahnen dort ist die Eisenbahn gerade mal konkurrenzfähig gegen ein Pferd...
