Were the Long Island Railroad tracks from the East River tunnels into the original NY Penn Station ever open to the sky? That is, with no buildings above them. In the Fitzgerald's "Great Gatsby" the narrator writes: "As my train emerged from the tunnel into sunlight, only the hot whistles of the National Biscuit Company broke the simmering hush at noon. " Nabisco was in Chelsea. Are there photos online?
At 55 seconds into the youtube video titled "Old Penn Station New York City with aerial & skyline views of Manhattan & Empire State" we can see west side above ground tracks but those I think are the marshalling yard.
