Help identifying piece of railroad

Hello,
My family and I have had this in our basement for years and we are not sure what it Is. My grandfather worked on the railroad in Pennsylvania (cresson). We think it's some sort of a lantern....
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Not likely from a locomotive or car, and not a hand lantern.

I expect, if it has a railroad association, it is from a station lamp post, similar to these.
