I had spent the night at "Hotel Center Ljubljana" - in front of it Slovenska cesta street was buzzing with morning commuter traffic, the railway bridge can be spotted in the background.
The newer part of Ljubljana main station has been constructed in a strange way, the underpass to the other platforms is located at the opposite end of platform 1 as the station building.
GM-EMD "Kennedy" 661-032, built in 1960 at La Grange, Illinois - still active.
EuroNight 415 to Belgrade was used to transfer class 541 locos from Jesenice.
At the other side of the station I met Misko, and we drove to the railway museum / steam loco roundhouse. With the newly built mosque in the background and German steamers in the foreground you could almost think you had visited Turkey in the steam age... ;-)
Inside the shed this old lady was being prepared for the charter leaving at noon.

Railways of many scales fascinate even adult children at the Ljubljana museum.
This workshop reminded me of the active ones in Bosnia - minus people occasionally working between breaks.
The signal box exhibition shows historic examples from all over the country.
Next, I explored the old city centre: here Tromostovje ("Three Bridges"), the town's landmark across Ljubljanica River.
Market scenes.
The old town is nicely kept, but there are grittier scenes to be found in some side streets.
The castle hill funicular railway.

After the disastrous earthquake of 1895 large parts of the city had to be rebuilt, with dozens of interesting art nouveau buildings.
Slovenian railways - from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic.
Two classic German exports at the main station: to the left 711-020 "Green Train" or "Mercedes", produced in 1970 by MBB Donauwörth based on DB class 624 with long-distance travel interior for the express connection Ljubljana - Belgrade. To the right 06-018, delivered in 1930 by Borsig, Berlin.
Preparation for the ride to Maribor.

First we waited for the train at a curve along Zalog marshalling yard.
The charter followed Sava River near Renke, about to reach Zagorje.
We just watched a "Brigitte" hauling a container freight (see video at minute 22:00), when 06-018 appeared in perfect spotlight arriving at Zidani Most.
Zidani Most ("Stone Bridge") is the junction on the way to the Balkans. Towards the back the line leads to Ljubljana, left along Sava River to Zagreb and Belgrade, right along Savinja River to Maribor and Austria. One of the name-giving bridges could as well have been traversed by a classic Balkan-express in this scene.
The train passed Marija Gradec church well-known to Southern Railway travellers. Only a couple of hundred yards on, Lasko brewery is reached - which we could have used well on this last hot summer day of the year.
The charter approached Celje, sadly this shot is only possible from the moving vehicle as the main road is situated right at the river bank.
After the arrival to Celje sadly 06-018 had to be replaced due to an overheated bearing... for the rest of the ride via Maribor to Spielfeld once more a class 664 "Reagan" took over.
However, even steam enthusiasts can enjoy a GM diesel.

Past Ranca the charter sped towards the border on the Maribor - Spielfeld section way early due to diesel-power.
In Austria 52.1227 already waited for the final stint of the day to Graz.
R 4190 of s-bahn line 51 from Bad Radkersburg arrived at Spielfeld-Straß station.
Three modes of traction.
The steam train departed loudly towards Graz filmed by fans.
My first class 541-sighting at Spielfeld.
Including a Desiro Mainline "Cityjet" three different Siemens Desiro variations met at the border station.
Misko said goodbye, and I waited for EuroCity "Emona" home. In the meantime, two photographers from Italy showed up, I explained that the steamer had left an hour early due to part diesel traction through Slovenia.
In the evening I arrived punctually at Vienna, but would already leave again the following day...
