Tehachapi, August 1974, the first SD40T-2.

Tehachapi, August 1974, the first SD40T-2.

Think way back before there ever was a dash 9, this is August of 1974.

The very first and brand new Southern Pacific SD40T-2 8300 is leading a train westbound (down grade) at Bealville, California on the Southern Pacific's Tehachapi line. It is just coming out of tunnel #3. That is tunnel #5 just above the second unit.

The grass on the hills is very dry from no rain for months and it is very hot, probably close to 100 at mid day. Come November and a little rain and everything will turn green again. That's the Tehachapi's.
