Last ride through the Sierra's

This photo shows 5 crummies rolling east for disposition. There were actually 9 cabs behind the rear helper, but I have misplaced the other prints. SP first began collecting surplus cabs in Tracy and later Roseville before finallysending them east in droves.
Was it meant for these caboose to be destroyed? I would figure any RR company that owned them would not want to "lose money" by getting rid of them
 
Most companies had fleets of 1,000 or more. Only a handful of cabs are really needed today for shoving/back up moves. I would guess that today's super sized railroad needs only 50 cabs. Many cabs have been preserved.
