Fifth Crossing of Tehachapi Creek

Fifth Crossing of Tehachapi Creek

Recreating Donald Duke's 1949 photo of a Santa Fe 3800-class 2-10-2 on the fifth crossing of Tehachapi Creek as seen on page 140 of John R. Signor's book "Tehachapi". Here is today's view of the same place only with diesels. This was taken on February 20, 2005 of a southbound Union Pacific empty grain train coming up Tehachapi grade and crossing the same bridge. This is at mp 350.25 only three quarters of a mile from the Loop's tunnel 9 which is at mp 351. Some trains are so long that the engineer can see the rear of his train coming across this bridge as his locomotive rounds the Loop.
It would look more like the 1949 shot if it was taken later in the year where the grass would be brown and the oak trees would have leaves on them. But since this is the "February Photo Assignment" contest where the pictures have to be taken in the months of January or February of 2005, I had to take it with the green grass of winter and no leaves on the deciduous oak trees. But I like it with the green grass, give it more color. Just wish I would have had more sun.
