This image founds its way to my digital film while railfanning in the Mojave Desert of Southern California in the town of Helendale which is between Victorville and Barstow on the BNSF. This is a UP manifest train, the Union Pacific has trackage rights between San Bernardino and Daggett.

In my opinion, too many railfans put their lens caps on too quickly... ie. once the locomotives pass, they are done shooting. The rolling stock, especially boxcars, is what hooked me into the wonderful world of railfanning. As soon as I saw these fresh boxes in the distance, I knew I had my shot. Minor adjustments made in PhotoImpact to enhance contrast and brightness, and to re-size.

Jeff furthers his comments and adds that he enjoys including crossing gates and flashers in his images.

Image captured on March 24th 2001 at 5:00pm, using the Canon A-50 digital assault camera. Image file processed with Ulead's PhotoImpact 4.2 software. Metered off the sky and underexposed 1/3 of a stop.
