Fallbridge
The BNSF (Oregon Trunk) bridge over the Columbia River at the site of Celilo Falls.
U
This bridge was built around 1900. This point on the river was once called Celilo Falls, it's underwater now because of The Dalles Dam, built in the 50s. The bridge piers were built during winter, on rocks that were exposed during low water. It would have been next to impossible to build them during high water because this stretch became a massive rapids. The lift span was originally fixed. The Dalles-Celilo canal passed beneath the southernmost truss span.

Interesting. It's similar to the wye bridge at Keddie in Feather River Canyon. However, this one is far larger and more impressive.

Great shot. Were you in an airplane, or high on the cliffs on the south side? I84 is just out of the picture at the lower-right corner. UP has an interesting spur to connect their mainline to the Oregon Trunk at this location.

To answer an earlier question, the BNSF bridge across the Columbia river at Pasco WA is very similar to this bridge, and about the same length.

The O.T. bridge is normally raised for river traffic and is lowered only when a train movement is expected soon. The bridge in Pasco is normally lowered for rail traffic.
