Steam to diesel back to steam

McCloud#38 and McCloud#18 have switched trains from freight and passenger. McCloud#18 will take the passenger again to Burney at Pondosa.

Why won't they repaint the VIA cars?

I don't know Russian, McCloud doesn't really paint their passenger and freight cars unlike their locomotives.

Russian- Simple answer to your question. Money. What money the railroad has gets spent on other things. Painting passenger cars is not something that ranks high enough on the priority list to get funded.

The dinner train is painted, but unless a new owner takes over the VIA cars never will be.

It's an SD40-2 along with the rest of McCloud's diesel locomotives and McCloud has a baldwin switcher which I believe is not running anymore but sits in the yard.

TrainPohll-

Wrong. It is a SD38, not a SD40-2. The McCloud River never did own any SD40-2s. The McCloud replaced its first generation diesels (8 Baldwins of various models) with 3 new SD38's in May 1969. They added a single SD38-2 in 1974. The SD38-2 went to UP in 1997, and the other SD38's remain active on the railroad today.

All three SD38's got this brown and orange paint scheme back in 1982. Supposedly it was to honor Auburn University, the school attended by Bill Herndon (the McCloud's president at the time). The #38 is the only unit still in McCloud still wearing this scheme, as the #36 and #37 got silver and red paint jobs back in 1996 and 1997.

The Baldwin switcher is a S-12, and it was built for the McCloud River in 1953 as their #30. It lasted on the McCloud until 1963, when it was sold to Rayonier Corp as their #203. Rayonier used it on their logging railroad at Sieku (Clallam County), on the extreme northern end of the Olympic Penninsula. When the Sieku operation closed in 1963 the #203 went to U.S. Steel in Pittsburg, CA. Around 1993 or 1994 the unit (along with several other US Steel Baldwins) went to the Portola Railroad Museum, and the PRM sold the locomotive back to the McCloud around 1995 or 1996. It has not operated since.
