It's 28 July 1992, and the brilliant mid-winter sunlight captures Queensland Rail 1634 at the crossing gates in the tiny town of Amamoor, on its way to the branch terminus of Melawondi. This was my first sojourn on this now-closed line, and I was amazed at the scene shown here, with picture-postcard crossing gates being manually controlled by one of the train crew. Needless to say, everything in this scene is now gone, including the branch itself, apart from a steam train operating regular services on part of the line.

Yes indeed - as i said in the original post the scene was very bucolic, to say the least. Those gates reminded me very much of a Hornby train set and considering that less than an hour's drive away Queensland rail runs state of the art trains the contrast could not be much stronger.

I used to work for John Holland Construction in the Philippines. Initially we obtained 6 of these QR 1620 Class English Electrics (and later on another 2) for use on a rehab project. Some later went to Thailand and then to Malaysia.
